SOUTHBOUND I-35, TEXAS — Severe traffic delays are expected along southbound Interstate 35 between Mile Marker 163 and Mile Marker 160, spanning from Petroleum Drive to Frost Bank Center Drive. TxDOT crews are implementing alternating main lane closures—first shifting between inside and outside lanes, then center and outside lanes—to accommodate a Phase 1 Step 2 traffic switch, main lane completion, and gore striping. Only one southbound travel lane will remain open during active work hours.
Traffic management crews have also closed multiple access points, including the ramps connecting northbound I-410 to southbound I-35, the Binz-Engleman Road entrance ramp, and Exit 160 to Frost Bank Center Drive. Detours are in effect: W.W. White Road traffic is diverted onto northbound I-410 to use the Rittiman Road turnaround, while northbound I-410 traffic is routed via the FM 78 exit and frontage roads. Drivers needing Frost Bank Center Drive are directed to utilize Exit 162 for BAMC or Exit 159B for North Walters Street and turn around.
The nighttime closure sequence begins at 9:00 p.m. on October 23, 2026, with all work and closures estimated to clear by 5:00 a.m. on October 26, 2026.
Commercial truck drivers and dispatchers moving through the San Antonio corridor should expect major congestion and utilize alternate freeway loops to avoid bottlenecks. We will update this report as TxDOT confirms lane reopenings or schedule adjustments.
