MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. - A Saturday morning tractor-trailer crash triggered significant traffic backups along Interstate 495 after the vehicle jackknifed and leaked fuel onto the highway.
According to officials with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), the incident occurred on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway between Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road, near Sligo Creek. Spokesperson Pete Piringer shared on X that the rig jackknifed during the crash, causing a fuel spill across the roadway.
The collision forced emergency crews to block multiple lanes as hazardous materials teams worked to contain and clean up the spilled fuel. Live traffic cameras along the Beltway showed slow-moving traffic backed up for more than two miles while responders managed the scene.
Authorities have not confirmed the number of vehicles involved or whether any injuries resulted from the incident. The Maryland State Police are reviewing the crash, and further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.
