Fatal Multi-Vehicle Semi-Truck Crash Closes Transmountain Overpass in Northwest El Paso
EL PASO, Texas - A Monday morning collision involving a commercial tractor-trailer and multiple passenger vehicles at the Transmountain overpass left one man dead, eight others injured, and forced the multi-day closure of westbound Loop 375 main lanes.
According to the El Paso Police Department, emergency dispatchers received the initial crash call at approximately 10:33 a.m. along Loop 375 (Transmountain Road) at the Interstate 10 overpass in Northwest El Paso.
Responding units with the El Paso Fire Department evaluated nine victims at the scene. One individual suffered critical injuries and was airlifted by emergency helicopter to a regional trauma center. Four others were transported by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, while four additional victims declined medical transport.
Police officials confirmed one adult male died from injuries sustained in the impact. Authorities have withheld his identity pending formal positive identification and next-of-kin notification.
The fatal pileup occurred along a notoriously difficult stretch of Transmountain Road, where commercial rigs navigate a steep mountain downgrade dropping toward the desert valley.
The incident sparked renewed debate among long-haul truckers regarding the hazards of operating heavy vehicles on Transmountain. Rudy Lopez Jr., an experienced semi-truck driver traveling through the area, noted that many truckers avoid the pass altogether due to extreme brake wear and thermal stress on downhill runs.
"I try to avoid it because of the downgrade... the downhill is really kind of crazy," Lopez said, emphasizing that passenger vehicles often cut off heavy rigs without realizing how much distance a loaded 18-wheeler requires to come to a stop. "People do not understand you can't get in front of a truck and expect them to stop like a regular car. That's not a thing."
The corridor has seen repeated high-profile truck crashes over recent years, including an August incident near Desert South and a prior runaway semi explosion that claimed a life and injured six others.
In response to the history of deadly runaway crashes, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently installed Texas's first mechanical runaway truck ramp on the left side of Transmountain Road, complementing three existing gravel arrester beds along the pass. TxDOT has also added dynamic warning beacons, rumble strips, and low-gear advisory signs.
Addressing calls to ban heavy trucks from Transmountain, TxDOT officials noted that state law generally prevents the department from restricting legally permitted commercial vehicles from state highways, focusing instead on engineering, signage, and mechanical safety ramps.
Due to ongoing crash reconstruction, vehicle recovery, and road surface repairs, TxDOT has closed all westbound main lanes on Loop 375 (SL 375).
The following roadway closures remain active through 4:45 PM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026:
All westbound traffic on Loop 375 is being redirected along marked frontage road detours. Motorists traveling between Northeast El Paso and West El Paso are strongly advised to bypass Transmountain Road and utilize I-10 or US-54 as alternate routes.
This investigation remains open under the El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic Investigations unit. We will update this report as new details emerge or lanes reopen.
