WINDSOR, Conn. - A late-afternoon tractor-trailer rollover triggered a diesel fuel spill and forced the complete closure of a major interstate ramp in Hartford County on Monday.
Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 4:00 p.m. to the Interstate 291 Westbound interchange at Exit 1A, where a commercial rig overturned while attempting to transition onto Interstate 91 Southbound.
The force of the rollover ruptured the semi-truck's saddle tanks, spilling diesel fuel across the connector ramp and surrounding pavement.
The South Windsor Fire Department reported that the driver managed to self-extricate from the overturned cab prior to the arrival of first responders. Connecticut State Police later confirmed that no injuries were reported in connection with the wreck.
Hazardous material response teams from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) arrived on site alongside crews from the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) to contain the fuel runoff and manage environmental cleanup efforts.
The ramp from I-291 West to I-91 South remained closed into Monday evening while heavy wreckers worked to right the overturned vehicle and state officials cleared the hazardous spill. State police urged motorists to bypass the interchange and expect localized traffic delays throughout the area.
The cause of the rollover remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police.
