EASTBOUND AND WESTBOUND SH-71, TEXAS — Severe winter conditions have triggered major travel disruptions along State Highway 71 in both directions across Travis County. Dangerous ice covers a 20-mile corridor extending from 3.722 miles west of RM-2322 to 2.625 miles west of US-290, between Mile Markers 0546 and 0566, prompting officials to classify the roadway impact at maximum severity.
Traffic management personnel have established active detours throughout the corridor, and transportation authorities are officially discouraging all travel through the impacted area. Roadway maintenance and clearance crews are actively monitoring the highway as significant delays continue to build in both directions.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the emergency alert began at 11:13 a.m. on November 6, 2026, with active advisories and operational disruptions currently projected to extend through August 25, 2027, unless conditions clear earlier.
Commercial truck drivers and dispatchers are advised to reroute freight around this stretch of SH-71 and utilize secondary alternate corridors until roadway surfaces are treated and reopened to standard travel. We will update this report as new information becomes available.
