UPDATE: ROAD REOPENED - October 26, 2026 7:20 PM UTC US-59 south of FM-1997 has reopened to traffic following the earlier lane closures.
SOUTHBOUND US-59, TEXAS — A major traffic incident has forced the complete shutdown of both southbound lanes and the inside northbound lane on US-59 near FM-1997, at Mile Marker 276. The closure extends nearly one mile south of the intersection, resulting in severe bottlenecks and stopped traffic along the corridor.
Emergency response and maintenance crews are currently on-site managing the scene and coordinating recovery operations. Official detours have been implemented to direct southbound traffic around the affected stretch of the highway.
Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials estimate that clearance efforts will continue through approximately 5:00 PM today. Heavy delays are expected to persist until the scene is fully cleared and all lanes are restored to normal operation.
Motorists and freight dispatchers should avoid this section of US-59 and seek alternate routes to prevent extended travel delays. We will update this report as soon as more details become available or lanes reopen.
