LINCOLN, Neb. - A routine traffic stop along Interstate 80 in Nebraska uncovered a massive cargo theft scheme, leading to the arrest of a semi-truck driver hauling 22 tons of stolen copper wire valued at $250,000.
The stop occurred around 2:00 p.m. on October 7, 2026, near mile marker 408 outside Lincoln. Investigators with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Criminal Interdiction Unit pulled over the commercial rig after noticing the truck driving on the shoulder and leaning heavily due to an unsecured, shifted load.
Upon stopping the vehicle, deputies discovered that the trailer lacked a shipping seal or lock. The driver identified as 22 year old Raman Pal of California was unable to present vehicle registration or a valid bill of lading. When questioned by investigators, Pal claimed he did not know what he was transporting, where the shipment originated, or where it was being delivered.
Pal consented to a vehicle search, allowing deputies to inspect the cargo area. Inside, officers located 11 unsecured pallets containing roughly 44,000 pounds of copper wire alongside two bolt cutters.
A search of the cab uncovered hidden shipping documents revealing the load had originated from a metal recycling facility in Chicago and was destined for a receiving facility in Carter Lake, Iowa. However, the driver had bypassed the intended Iowa drop off point and continued heading west through Nebraska.
Subsequent verification confirmed that the shipment had been stolen and was not in the possession of an authorised motor carrier.
LCSO officials disclosed that the victimised Chicago scrap metal company has suffered four stolen loads this year alone, amounting to over $1 million in total losses. Investigators suspect this intercept is tied to a broader organised cargo theft network targeting high value freight.
Pal was taken into custody and booked into the Lancaster County Jail. He faces felony charges including theft by receiving stolen property over $5,000, possession of burglary tools, and criminal impersonation after presenting conflicting identification.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation alongside multi jurisdictional law enforcement partners to identify additional co conspirators in the theft operation.
