Tractor-Trailer Erupts in Flames on I-280 in Harrison as Burning Fuel Spreads Along Highway Median
HARRISON, N.J. - A fiery commercial vehicle crash along Interstate 280 sent thick plumes of black smoke into the sky Tuesday morning, triggering a multi-agency firefighting effort and halting traffic in both directions through Hudson County.
Emergency responders were dispatched shortly before 10:36 a.m. to the I-280 corridor near Exit 16E for Essex Street, along the border of Harrison and Kearny. Upon arrival, Tour 3 firefighters from the Harrison Fire Department encountered a tractor-trailer fully engulfed in flames, with the commercial rig coming to a rest against the highway's concrete median barrier.

As fire crews evaluated the scene, a secondary hazard quickly developed: diesel fuel leaking from the damaged saddle tanks ignited, creating a running line of fire along the median barrier.
Because of the intensity of the blaze and the environmental hazards on the roadway, Harrison firefighters deployed at least two hose lines and were immediately joined by mutual aid companies from the Kearny and Newark Fire Departments, which regularly provide joint coverage along Route 280.
New Jersey State Police troopers completely closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 280 to allow emergency units to operate safely. The heavy smoke billowing across the highway prompted severe slowdowns and temporary full stoppages in the eastbound lanes as well, causing multi-mile traffic backups extending into surrounding municipal corridors.
Fire officials confirmed that the trailer unit was empty at the time of the collision, preventing cargo-related hazards or chemical spills beyond the diesel fuel itself.
No injuries were immediately reported among emergency personnel, the truck operator, or passing motorists.
All lanes were eventually reopened following extensive suppression, fuel containment, and heavy towing operations. The official cause of the crash and subsequent fire remains under active investigation by state and local authorities.
