A tragic pedestrian accident claimed the life of a 4 year old child Thursday afternoon after being struck by a tractor trailer along Route 41 in Chester County.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the incident occurred shortly before 12:25 p.m. on September 24 north of Highland Road in Highland Township. Investigators report that the child had initially been walking in a grassy area along the shoulder of the southbound lane while a semi-truck was traveling north.
The child then entered the roadway, crossed the southbound lane, and moved into the northbound lane, where the tractor-trailer struck them. Emergency responders transported the child to Lancaster General Hospital, where they tragically succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.
Authorities have not released the identity of the child or the truck driver. State police have also not specified whether an adult was present with the child at the time, or what caused the child to enter the busy highway.
The fatal crash remains actively under investigation by state police.
